There are 2 other perl modules that implement the \f(CWmknod(2)\fR system call,
but they have problems working on some platforms.  \f(CW\*(C`Sys::Mknod\*(C'\fR does not
work on \s-1AIX\s0 because it uses the \f(CWsyscall(2)\fR generic system call which
\&\s-1AIX\s0 does not have.  \f(CW\*(C`Mknod\*(C'\fR implements S_IFIFO, which on most platforms
is not implemented in \f(CWmknod(1)\fR, but rather \f(CWmkfifo(1)\fR (which is
implemented in \s-1POSIX\s0 perl module).

The perl module \f(CW\*(C`File::Stat::Bits\*(C'\fR also implements \fImajor()\fR and \fIminor()\fR (and
a version of \fImakedev()\fR called dev_join).  They are done as a program to
get the bit masks at compile time, but if \fImajor()\fR and \fIminor()\fR are 
implemented as sub routines, the arugment could be something as simple
as an index to a lookup table (and thereby having no decernable relation
to its result).
