O \fBrunlevel\fP lê o ficheiro \fIutmp\fP do sistema (tipicamente
\fI/var/run/utmp\fP) para localizar o registo do runlevel, e depois escreve o
runlevel anterior e actual do sistema na sua saída standard, separados por
um espaço único. Se não existir um runlevel de sistema anterior, então é
escrita a letra \fBN\fP.

Se nenhum ficheiro \fIutmp\fP existir, e se nenhum registo de runlevel puder
ser encontrado no ficheiro \fI/var/run/runlevel\fP, o \fBrunlevel\fP escreve a
palavra \fBunknown\fP e termina com erro.

O \fBrunlevel\fP pode ser usado em scripts \fIrc\fP como substituto do comando
\fBwho \-r\fP do System\-V. No entanto, em versões mais recentes do \fBinit\fP(8)
