uum は、日本語入出力環境を提供するコマンドである。
uum は起動後、初期化ファイルを次の順にサーチする。

  1. 環境変数 UUMRC のファイル名
  2. $HOME/.uumrc
  3. /usr/local/lib/wnn/uumrc (デフォルト)

uum は、インターネットにより別のマシン上のかな漢字変換サーバ jserver(1)と
接続することが可能で、負荷の分散を図ることができる。
仮にサーバと接続できなくても uum は起動できる。これにより、かな漢字変換サーバ
との通信を必要としないオペレーションの使用が可能である。
また、変換キーが押された時 jserver と接続できていなければ、自動的に接続を確立
しようとする。

以下のオプションにより動作を指定する。

ローマ字仮名変換 (オートマトン(3J_T) のモード定義表ファイルの指定。
ディレクトリ名の場合、その下の mode ファイルが対象になる。
省略時は、次の順にサーチする。
  1. 初期化ファイル uumrc の setrkfile エントリのファイル名
  2. ファイル名 /usr/local/lib/wnn/rk/mode

-l 変換行数
仮名漢字変換に使用する行数(0 < 変換行数 < 画面行数 - 1)を指定する。
省略字は、1。

-D ホスト名
仮名漢字変換サーバ(jserver(1_JT))をホスト名で指定する。
省略時は、環境変数 JSERVER を見る。それも無ければ、
/etc/hosts の jserver のalias を探す。それもなければ、
UNIX-Domain が指定される。

-n 環境名
辞書管理のための環境名を指定する。
省略時は、環境変数 WNNUSER を見る。それも無ければ uum プロセスの実
UID のオーナー名を取る。

uum は、pty を１つ獲得するので、pty が獲得できない場合は、起動できない。
また、初期化ファイル, キーバインド定義ファイル, ローマ字仮名変換のモード定義表
ファイルが見つからない場合も起動できない。
辞書管理は、環境名で行われる。
