There must be no characters before that, even spaces or BOM. .SS Authentication with netrc .PP You may also want to configure automatic credentials storage for extractors that support authentication (by providing login and password with \f[V]--username\f[R] and \f[V]--password\f[R]) in order not to pass credentials as command line arguments on every yt-dlp execution and prevent tracking plain text passwords in the shell command history. Similarly, \f[V]bv*.3\f[R] will select the 3rd best format that contains a video stream. .PP If you want to download multiple videos, and they don\[aq]t have the same formats available, you can specify the order of preference using slashes. Note that formats on the left hand side are preferred; e.g. \f[V]-f 22/17/18\f[R] will download format 22 if it\[aq]s available, otherwise it will download format 17 if it\[aq]s available, otherwise it will download format 18 if it\[aq]s available, otherwise it will complain that no suitable formats are available for download. .PP If you want to download several formats of the same video use a comma as a separator, e.g. \f[V]-f 22,17,18\f[R] will download all these three formats, of course if they are available. Or a more sophisticated example combined with the precedence feature: \f[V]-f 136/137/mp4/bestvideo,140/m4a/bestaudio\f[R]. .PP You can merge the video and audio of multiple formats into a single file using \f[V]-f ++...\f[R] (requires ffmpeg installed); e.g. \f[V]-f bestvideo+bestaudio\f[R] will download the best video-only format, the best audio-only format and mux them together with ffmpeg. .PP \f[B]Deprecation warning\f[R]: Since the \f[I]below\f[R] described behavior is complex and counter-intuitive, this will be removed and multistreams will be enabled by default in the future. A new operator will be instead added to limit formats to single audio/video .PP Unless \f[V]--video-multistreams\f[R] is used, all formats with a video stream except the first one are ignored. Similarly, unless \f[V]--audio-multistreams\f[R] is used, all formats with an audio stream except the first one are ignored. E.g. \f[V]-f bestvideo+best+bestaudio --video-multistreams --audio-multistreams\f[R] will download and merge all 3 given formats. The resulting file will have 2 video streams and 2 audio streams. But \f[V]-f bestvideo+best+bestaudio --no-video-multistreams\f[R] will download and merge only \f[V]bestvideo\f[R] and \f[V]bestaudio\f[R]. \f[V]best\f[R] is ignored since another format containing a video stream (\f[V]bestvideo\f[R]) has already been selected. The comparand of a string comparison needs to be quoted with either double or single quotes if it contains spaces or special characters other than \f[V]._-\f[R]. .PP \f[B]Note\f[R]: None of the aforementioned meta fields are guaranteed to be present since this solely depends on the metadata obtained by particular extractor, i.e. the metadata offered by the website. Any other field made available by the extractor can also be used for filtering. .PP Formats for which the value is not known are excluded unless you put a question mark (\f[V]?\f[R]) after the operator. You can combine format filters, so \f[V]-f \[dq]bv[height<=?720][tbr>500]\[dq]\f[R] selects up to 720p videos (or videos where the height is not known) with a bitrate of at least 500 kbps. You can also use the filters with \f[V]all\f[R] to download all formats that satisfy the filter, e.g. \f[V]-f \[dq]all[vcodec=none]\[dq]\f[R] selects all audio-only formats. .PP Format selectors can also be grouped using parentheses; e.g. \f[V]-f \[dq](mp4,webm)[height<480]\[dq]\f[R] will download the best pre-merged mp4 and webm formats with a height lower than 480. .SS Sorting Formats .PP You can change the criteria for being considered the \f[V]best\f[R] by using \f[V]-S\f[R] (\f[V]--format-sort\f[R]). E.g. \f[V]+res\f[R] prefers format with the smallest resolution. Additionally, you can suffix a preferred value for the fields, separated by a \f[V]:\f[R]. E.g. \f[V]res:720\f[R] prefers larger videos, but no larger than 720p and the smallest video if there are no videos less than 720p. For \f[V]codec\f[R] and \f[V]ext\f[R], you can provide two preferred values, the first for video and the second for audio. E.g. \f[V]+codec:avc:m4a\f[R] (equivalent to \f[V]+vcodec:avc,+acodec:m4a\f[R]) sets the video codec preference to \f[V]h264\f[R] > \f[V]h265\f[R] > \f[V]vp9\f[R] > \f[V]vp9.2\f[R] > \f[V]av01\f[R] > \f[V]vp8\f[R] > \f[V]h263\f[R] > \f[V]theora\f[R] and audio codec preference to \f[V]mp4a\f[R] > \f[V]aac\f[R] > \f[V]vorbis\f[R] > \f[V]opus\f[R] > \f[V]mp3\f[R] > \f[V]ac3\f[R] > \f[V]dts\f[R]. You can also make the sorting prefer the nearest values to the provided by using \f[V]\[ti]\f[R] as the delimiter. E.g. \f[V]filesize\[ti]1G\f[R] prefers the format with filesize closest to 1 GiB. .PP The fields \f[V]hasvid\f[R] and \f[V]ie_pref\f[R] are always given highest priority in sorting, irrespective of the user-defined order. This behaviour can be changed by using \f[V]--format-sort-force\f[R]. Apart from these, the default order used is: \f[V]lang,quality,res,fps,hdr:12,vcodec:vp9.2,channels,acodec,size,br,asr,proto,ext,hasaud,source,id\f[R]. The extractors may override this default order, but they cannot override the user-provided order. .PP Note that the default has \f[V]vcodec:vp9.2\f[R]; i.e. \f[V]av1\f[R] is not preferred. Similarly, the default for hdr is \f[V]hdr:12\f[R]; i.e. dolby vision is not preferred. These choices are made since DV and AV1 formats are not yet fully compatible with most devices. This may be changed in the future as more devices become capable of smoothly playing back these formats. .PP If your format selector is \f[V]worst\f[R], the last item is selected after sorting. This means it will select the format that is worst in all respects. Most of the time, what you actually want is the video with the smallest filesize instead. Backreferences (https://docs.python.org/3/library/re.html?highlight=backreferences#re.sub) can be used in the replace string for advanced use. .PP The general syntax of \f[V]--parse-metadata FROM:TO\f[R] is to give the name of a field or an output template to extract data from, and the format to interpret it as, separated by a colon \f[V]:\f[R]. Either a Python regular expression (https://docs.python.org/3/library/re.html#regular-expression-syntax) with named capture groups, a single field name, or a similar syntax to the output template (only \f[V]%(field)s\f[R] formatting is supported) can be used for \f[V]TO\f[R]. The option can be used multiple times to parse and modify various fields. .PP Note that these options preserve their relative order, allowing replacements to be made in parsed fields and viceversa. Also, any field thus created can be used in the output template and will also affect the media file\[aq]s metadata added when using \f[V]--embed-metadata\f[R]. .PP This option also has a few special uses: .IP \[bu] 2 You can download an additional URL based on the metadata of the currently downloaded video. To do this, set the field \f[V]additional_urls\f[R] to the URL that you want to download. E.g. \f[V]--parse-metadata \[dq]description:(?Phttps?://www\[rs].vimeo\[rs].com/\[rs]d+)\[dq]\f[R] will download the first vimeo video found in the description .IP \[bu] 2 You can use this to change the metadata that is embedded in the media file. To do this, set the value of the corresponding field with a \f[V]meta_\f[R] prefix. For example, any value you set to \f[V]meta_description\f[R] field will be added to the \f[V]description\f[R] field in the file - you can use this to set a different \[dq]description\[dq] and \[dq]synopsis\[dq]. To modify the metadata of individual streams, use the \f[V]meta_\f[R] prefix (e.g. \f[V]meta1_language\f[R]). Any value set to the \f[V]meta_\f[R] field will overwrite all default values. .PP \f[B]Note\f[R]: Metadata modification happens before format selection, post-extraction and other post-processing operations.
