這個命令進入 Tcl 事件迴圈來處理事件，如果沒有事件就緒則阻塞應用。它連續處理事件直到一些事件處理器設定了 \fIvarName\fR 變數的值。一旦設定了 \fIvarName\fR ，則\fBvwait\fR 命令在修改 \fIvarName\fR 的那個事件處理器完成之後立即返回。\fIvarName\fR 必須是全域性作用域的(要麼為這個變數呼叫 \fBglobal\fR，要麼為它加上完整的名字空間路徑指定)。

在一些情況下，\fBvwait\fR 命令在設定了 \fIvarName\fR 之後可能不立即返回。如果設定 \fIvarName\fR 的那個事件處理器未立即完成則可能發生這種情況。例如，如果一個事件處理器設定了 \fIvarName\fR 並接著它自身呼叫 \fBvwait\fR 來等待一個不同的變數，則它可能很長時間不返回。在此期間頂層的 \fBvwait\fR 被阻塞來等待事件處理器完成，所以都不能返回。
