A \fB/etc/motd\fP fájl tartalma a
.BR login (1) 
után jelenik meg sikeres bejelentkezést követően, mielőtt elindulna a login
shell.

A "motd" rövidítés jelentése "a nap üzenete" ("message of the day"), és ez a
fájl hagyományosan e célt szolgálja (jóval kevesebb lemezterületet igényel,
mintha minden felhasználónak levelet küldenénk).
