Il file \fI/etc/ttytype\fP associa i nomi dei terminali per
\fBtermcap\fP(5)/\fBterminfo\fP(5) ai nomi delle linee tty. Ogni riga consiste di
un nome di terminale seguito da uno spazio, seguito da un nome di tty (un
nome di periferica senza il prefisso \fI/dev/\fP).

Questa associazione viene usata dal programma \fBtset\fP(1) per impostare la
variabile d'ambiente \fBTERM\fP al nome di terminale predefinito per il tty
attuale dell'utente.

Questa funzionalità è progettata per una ambiente tradizionale a partizione
di tempo con terminali a celle di caratteri collegate ad un minicomputer
UNIX. È di poca utilità con le moderne stazioni di lavoro e i sistemi UNIX
